Overscheduled!

  • Jun. 19th, 2008 at 10:33 AM
OK, I need to know:  How do families with a zillion kids in a zillion activities do it?  I honestly cannot WAIT until this month is over.

I only have a single kid, she has been doing ballet and gymnastics all (school) year, with karate being added in January.  During the week, it hasn't been a problem at all, easily scheduled, different days, different times.    We signed up for the community center's track program for the summer, so we'd have something to do with the previous three activities all taking the summer off.  Well, of course, I hadn't realized that track "summer" started Memorial Day weekend and ends mid-July.  Ballet was seriously ramped up all month long with dress rehearsals at "not the normal" class time, plus picture day.  The performance came this week, the same day as her Karate graduation, which we had to skip. Gymnastics "graduation" happened this week.  I have regular autocross meetings and activities myself, some of which I've skipped this month, plus an out of the ordinary meeting to try to get a new site to race on I volunteered to help with (or someone else volunteered me, I forget which).  Sean and I signed up for a high performance Driver's Education day at our local 2.5 mile racetrack, and had to attend a mandatory safety and orientation class this week, the school day is next week. Father's Day was this week, with the obligatory gathering at the in-laws'.  Suffice it to say, we've not eaten a meal at home since last Saturday, nor will we tonight.

I know that there are families for whom this is Standard Operating Procedure.  How on earth do you do it? When do you sit around and stare at the walls?  When do you have time to think?

I mentioned the stress of "all this going on in June" to a friend... she merely laughed at me and said that I didn't even have a school age kid, imagine doing all that with a graduating senior in the house.  I can't.  I just want to get through the Fourth of July weekend after which I can pass out!

Oh, right.  Swimming starts June 30th.

Sigh.

I let my kids be in about two things. It is usually one sport, and one musical instrument.

Riley takes dance all year, and adds in soccer and swimming during their respective seasons.

It is good when you can sign up for something with a pal, so there is another family to help out sometimes.

I'm sure you will get it all figured out just right for your family..:)
